Devon & Cornwall Police, UK - Simulator Hires -
Pilot Project/Focus Test
When Devon and Cornwall Police needed to research ways of engaging with young people in the area of crime reduction they approached AI Group to suggest a simulation solution for the job.
Based around the company's 20-seat Morphis simulator, AI Group proposed a touring presentation using the simulator and special ridefilms to engage the audience and promote message retention.
To prove the feasibility of the solution, a two day focus test, facilitated by Plymstock School, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, the Regional Interactive Safety Centre, British Transport Police and the Government Officer for the South West Region, was undertaken, with the simulator, operating staff and library ridefilm provided on short term hire to the police by AI Group.
Two hundred and sixty pupils of Plymstock School volunteered to participate in the test project, which involved a traditional lesson from police officers about crime reduction followed by a ride aboard the simulator to experience an educational simulation ride.
A comparison of the message retention value of each method will be tested when pupils are quizzed at a later date to see which style of instruction, traditional or high-tech, proves the most effective. If successful, a simulation tour is proposed as a means for delivering messages on crime reduction, life skills and personal safety education to schools throughout the South West over the next five years.
